I think the Mets would have happily given Berto the 1 year 2.75 mil deal he got from the Pirates. Berto seemed to think he was worth more, like Tom Gordon more... so they made the deal for Sanchez. When Hernandez realized what the market was the Mets were already set, having Juan Padilla as well at that time. Russo on WFAN was going to ask Omar about letting Berto leave in his interview yesterday, but then the Sanchez news broke and that was more the focus. Omar stated that he felt more compelled to trade Nady because of the accident/injury, and that on Sunday Omar felt he was close to landing a big starter. You can add that up to Nady or Heilman in a trade for Zito or Schmidt quite nicely. Its a shame about the Daunanator, its a hard leak to plug any way you look at it.
