Amazing win Wednesday for the Mets.

Pedro described his rehab start Wednesday in Florida as being “perfect.”  On the numbers alone, it’s hard to quibble with six innings, two runs, four hits, no walks and six strikeouts.  Even better, he threw 63 of 82 pitches for strikes working mostly off his fastball which was 87-89, with a few 91 mph heaters tossed in.  And he’s happy, and healthy.  By the way, Pedro made three starts for St. Lucie last year and this was significantly better than any of those three.

It’s no secret that Mike Pelfrey has struggled this year.  It’s no secret he could be headed to the minors.  It’s no secret why: his command has been lousy.  However, I really liked his quote here about himself: "I know I can be a winning pitcher, that's what irritates me. If I thought I wasn't any good, I could accept it a little easier. But I know I can be, and I can help us win."  Like Pelfrey, I think he can be a winning pitcher.  Like Pelfrey, I think he could help the Mets.  (Actually, I think he must help the Mets for the team to be successful this year and in the future.)  However, remember how much more frustrating it is for him than for the fans.  This is his life and his career.  It’s our passion.

Stars of the Day:

AAA: Tony Armas

AA: Josh Petersen

A+: PEDRO/Lucas Duda

A: Off

New Orleans (AAA – Pacific Coast League)

Round Rock Express 5, @ New Orleans Zephyrs 1

Tony Armas Jr. (2-5, 2.23) threw well again, but the Zs waited until the ninth inning to find a run.  Armas gave up just one run on six hits in seven innings, fanning seven without walking a batter.

Binghamton (AA - Eastern League)

@ Portland Sea Dogs 3, Binghamton Mets 1

Daniel Haigwood shutout the Mets through five innings, outdueling Eric Brown.  Haigwood, who’s with his fourth organization, is remarkably well traveled for a 24-year-old lefty.  Brown (2-4, 5.88) yieled three runs in 6.1, fanning six, a fine performance by his standards.

Only DH Josh Petersen, who was 2-4, had more than one hit.

St. Lucie (A+ - Florida State League)

Vero Beach Devil Rays 2, @ St. Lucie Mets 0

David Price outdueled Pedro.  Pedro’s crispness, (6K, 0 BB) has to have Mets fans thrilled.  Kinda like the Rays fans should be thrilled that Price, last year’s #1 overall pick has started his career with 11 shutout innings.  Price struck out nine Mets in six shutout innings allowing just two baserunners, without walking a batter hitting 97 on the gun. Pedro was suitably impressed, calling Price “amazing”.

1B Lucas Duda was 2-4 with a double while C Robinson Cancel was 2-3.

Savannah (A – South Atlantic League)

Savannah Sand Gnats

Off.  The Gnats host Augusta this weekend.
