Fernando Martinez will see doctors in NYC on Friday.

Stars of the Day:

AAA: Brian Stokes

AA: Dan Murphy & Nick Murphy/Eude Brito

A+: Ezequiel Carrera & Luis Rivera

A: Angel Calero & Jose Bierd/Jared Abruzzo

New Orleans (AAA – Pacific Coast League)

@ Nashville Sounds (16-23) 2, New Orleans Zephyrs (20-20, -3.0) 1

The Sounds scored single runs in the second and third, and Lindsay Gulin made it stand up, no-hitting the Zephyrs through six innings.  New Orleans had just two hits all night.

Brian Stokes (4-4, 5.32) lost, despite giving up two runs on five hits in six innings.  He fanned seven and walked two.  Tim McNab struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief.

Exhale now because Raul Casanova cleared waivers and will report to the Zephyrs.

The Zephyrs have lost four games in a row and sit in third place in the PCL American South.

Binghamton (AA - Eastern League)

@ Binghamton Mets (18-21, -6.5) 7, New Britain Rock Cats (20-19) 6 (11 innings)

The B-Mets won a wild game in the bottom of the 11th when Dan Murphy doubled, and Nick Evans singled him home.  Murphy (.325/.368/.487) was 3-6 with a double and two runs scored while Evans (.299/.360/.563) was a similar 3-6 with a two-run triple and a run scored.  Miguel Paniagua was 2-5 with a homer and three RBI from the nine-hole.

New Britain scored three times in the top of the first, and once in the second.  Binghamton, which picked up a run back in the bottom of the first, tallied four times in the second to take a 5-4 lead that New Britain erased quickly with a two-run third.

Jon Niese struggled through one of his worst starts of the year, yielding six runs on eight hits in three innings.  However, the bullpen of Eude Brito, German Marte, Tim Lavigne and Eddie Camacho combined on eight scoreless innings.

Remember, weird things happen in 10:30 AM games.

The B-Mets have won four in a row and have climbed within 6.5 games of first.

St. Lucie (A+ - Florida State League)

Daytona Cubs (19-21) 5, @ St. Lucie Mets (8-32, -17.0) 2

Of the Mets nine hits, seven were singles.  Of the nine hits, eight belonged to four players each with two-hit games.  CF Ezequiel Carrera and 2B Luis Rivera were an identical 2-4, R, 2B at the top of the order.  DJ Wabick (.286/.336/.371, 140 AB; age 23) was 2-3 with 2 RBI while Leivi Ventura tossed in two singles as well.  DH Lucas Duda (.291/.367/.418, age 22) didn’t have a hit but he did walk twice.

Eric Niesen (0-5, 6.15) kept the Mets in the game, but lost a gain for allowing three runs in the fifth.  Stephen Clyne (13.11 ERA) continues to struggle in the pen, allowing a run in an 1.1 of work.

St. Lucie has lost eight in a row and 11 of 12.

Savannah (A – South Atlantic League)

@ Savannah Sand Gnats (18-22, -9.0) 4, Asheville Tourists (27-14) 3

After Savannah scored a run in the bottom of the first, neither team crossed home plate until the sixth, when each side plated three runs.  The Gnats took advantage of four Tourists’ errors as C Francisco Pena scored the go-ahead run from first on a single that was misplayed in the outfield.  Pena was 1-4 with an RBI and a R scored.  DH Jared Abruzzo was 4-4 with a R and an RBI to keeping his batting average at a lofty .413.

Angel Calero (0-4, 2.68) shut out the Tourists through five innings, tiring in the sixth and eventually allowing three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings.  He fanned six and walked two.  Nick Waechter didn’t allow a run over three innings, fanning three, but needed help in the ninth as closer Jose Bierd nailed down the final two outs.  Despite his win-less start, Calero has, on the whole, thrown well.  In 43.2 IP, the league has just 32 hits against him, good for a .204 batting average and his K/BB rate is a very healthy 3.55 (39 K/11 BB).

The Gnats, victorious in three straight games, knocked the Tourists from first place with the win.
