Stars of the Day:

AAA: Off

AA: *Mike Carp* & Dan Murphy

A+: Ezequiel Carrera & Ruben Tejada

A: Angel Calero/Francisco Pena

New Orleans (AAA – Pacific Coast League)

New Orleans Zephyrs

Check out this story on OF Chris Aguila, who missed much of last year with a strained intercostal muscle.  The better story is that the ethnic Samoan is surely the only Mets farmhand who can do the fire knife dance.

The 11-9 Zephyrs are four games behind the division leading Oklahoma RedHawks in third place in the PCL American South.  New Orleans hosts Round Rock for four games beginning Thursday night.

Binghamton (AA - Eastern League)

Trenton Thunder (12-9) 8, @ Binghamton Mets (9-11, -5.5) 5

The B-Mets had two different leads, and were tied through seven, but the Thunder roared late with four runs over the final two frames.

DH Mike Carp was 3-4 with an RBI double in the eighth, and a run scored, and one way or another was involved in all three B-Mets scoring innings.  Carp, hitting .442/.482/.556 leads the league in OPS, slugging, is second in the league in average, and third in on-base-percentage and is tied for the lead with 19 RBI and tied for third with five HR.  Dan Murphy (.392/.438/.532) was 2-4 with hits in the middle of a few rallies.  Fernando Martinez was 1-4 with a walk to extend his hit streak to seven games.

Jacob Ruckle was ok through five, giving up three runs and striking out five.  However, 29-year old Eude Brito’s Mets debut was ugly as the veteran lefty gave up three runs on four hits over seven outs to take the loss.

Excellent pitching matchup on Thursday as Jon Niese (1-1, 0.93) takes on Red Sox prospect Justin Masterson (1-0, 0.95) who BA ranked #4 in the system.

St. Lucie (A+ - Florida State League)

Daytona Cubs (11-9) 5, @ St. Lucie Mets (2-18, -12.0) 4

Luis Rivera drilled a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, but the Mets couldn’t get the tying run aboard in dropping their ninth game in a row.  Third baseman Rivera was 2-3.  CF Ezequiel Carrera (.253/.326/.373) was 2-5 with a double from the leadoff spot, while SS Ruben Tejada (.262/.311/.345) was 2-3 with a double, R and RBI from the two-hole.

Eric Niesen, the Wake Forest product had a nice start, giving up two runs over five innings, walking two and whiffing two, but still took the loss to fall to 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA.

--Thursday morning the Mets activated Tobi Stoner from the DL and sent Matias Carillo (0-1, 5.25 in 12 IP) back to the Brooklyn roster.

Savannah (A – South Atlantic League)

Charleston River Dogs (17-3) 4, @ Savannah Sand Gnats (6-14, -11.0) 0

Angel Calero (0-3, 3.54) was perfect through five innings, but Charleston broke through in the sixth, while the Gnats collected just four hits all night.  In 6.1 innings, Calero struck out four and walked one, eventually giving up three runs, two earned on two hits.  Despite going winless in his first four starts, the lefthander has strong peripherals including 20 strikeouts, and just four walks (k/bb of 5) in 20.1 IP.

C Francisco Pena (.254/.309/.349) was 2-4 to hit safely in his fifth game in a row.
