Your Saturday starter for the New York Mets: Mike Pelfrey.
Brian Moritz in the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports that Carlos Muniz is heading up to New Orleans. Muniz (2-4, 2.45) has quietly put together one of the best seasons in the Mets system. He’s saved 23 games, but more importantly was the dominant way in which he did so. In 58.2 innings, he allowed just a .197 batting average against. He’s fanned 62, walked just 17 and allowed only two home runs. The only quibble with his season from a statistical perspective is that he has a groundball to flyball ratio of .51, odd considering he hasn’t been hurt by home runs at all.

Looks like a little bit of rest did a lot of good for Mike Pelfrey who threw 2.2 hitless innings in Oklahoma Tuesday night. He fanned three and walked one throwing 67% (29/43) of his pitches for strikes in proving to the Mets that he’s ready to go back to the big leagues. The ‘Hawks lit up Steve Schmoll for four runs in an inning, but Willie Collazo extinguished the rally with a brilliant 5.1 innings in relief. He whiffed seven and yielded just three hits. When I first saw Collazo, his stuff didn’t blow me away, but he has really grown on me, just as he’s gnawed on PCL hitters and I really do believe he deserves to be up in September.
Fernando Tatis and Chad Hermansen were each 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Andy Tracy broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run triple in the fifth.
The Zs are now one game behind the Albuquerque Isotopes for first place, and a half game up on Oklahoma.

The Mets jumped on rehabbing Twin Glen Perkins with two first inning home runs. Wilson Batista lifted a solo homer and a Brett Harped followed with a two run shot to put the B-Mets up 3-0. Batista (.241/.266/.379 – age 27) was 3-5. Miguel Negron was 3-5 at the top of the order with a home run (a two run job in the eighth) and three RBI.
Michael Devaney (6-8, 4.82) tossed six shutout frames, walking one and punching out three.
They’ll play two on Wednesday.
A+ -- St. Lucie (
@ Jupiter Hammerheads (28-34/59-73) 5, Mets (34-30/65-69) 3
Emmanuel Garcia (.261/.339/.307) was 2-5 from the leadoff spot as he continues to enjoy his best month of the year in August hitting (.321/.374/.396). At age 21, he’s displayed some plate discipline, drawing 58 walks, while fanning 100 times. He’s also 32 for 44 stealing bases. Nick Evans (.283/.371/.473 – age 21) ended a four-game hitless draught with a 2-3 night with a walk and RBI. Hector Pellot was 1-3 with two walks.
Tobi Stoner was touched for five runs in five innings in taking his fourth loss to go along with his 4.98 ERA. Kevin Tomasiewicz and German Marte combined for three scoreless innings to conclude the game.
The Mets have a two game lead over Brevard County and a two and a half game advantage over Palm Beach.

Darren Clark upped his line in the SAL to .333/.385/.452 with a 3-5. He’s 23. Joe Holden and DJ Wabick each added two hits and a double. Francisco Pena also doubled – and at this point, any sign of power from him is great.
On the
pitching side, two guys came up from Kingsport to make their SAL debuts to
decidedly mixed results. Bradley Burns, the former Oklahoma
Sooner and this year’s 28th round draft pick, started, allowing just
two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks and fanning two in five
innings. The 21 year old Burns was 3-4
with a 3.51 ERA in the Appy League.
Meanwhile Philips Orta walked
five in just two thirds of an inning.
Orta had a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings in the VSL and was 2-2, 4.58 in
Kingsport in 11 starts. He fanned 45 and
walked 21 in 53 Appy League innings so the control problems aren’t new.
The Gnats broke a 4-4 tie with
a run in the top of the ninth only to watch David Koons blow the save in the bottom half of the inning.

York-Penn League)

Game 2: @
Cyclones (43-20) 4, Hudson Valley Renegades (30-36) 0 (7 innings)
In game one, Ezequiel Carrera was a perfect 2-2 with a walk and scored twice. In nine games in the NYP league, he’s 9-25 for a .360 average. Michael Antonini (0-0, 0.59) made his first NYP League start a good one, firing off 4.1 scoreless innings. The 22-year old righty hails from the tastefully named Milledgeville, GA (Lastingstown is in the adjacent county). Steven Clyne allowed two runs, one earned thanks to a walk and a hit-batsman in the ninth.
Game two was all about Nick Waechter, who was a second-inning groundball single up the middle away from a seven-inning no-hitter. Waechter (5-3, 3.41) struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter. As a collegian, his success in the NYP is hardly surprising and a full-season league next year will be a much better barometer of his future.

On the penultimate day of the regular season, the K-Mets rapped out 16 hits. DH Tyler Vaughn (.277/.348/.494 – age 22) was 3-5 with two doubles. CF Daniel Stegall (.226/.325/.317 – age 19) was 3-4 with two walks. Third baseman Nicholas Giarraputo (.275/.300/.364 – age 19) was 2-6 with a double, his 23rd of the year, and his third straight game with a two-bagger.
Can you find the best prospect of the three?
I’ll give you a hint, Giarraputo’s double total puts him second in the Appy League.
