Stars of the Day:

AAA: Mike Pelfrey/Ben Johnson & Jake Gautreau

AA: Michael Devaney/Mark Kiger

A+: Jose Castro

A: Greg Mullens/Greg Veloz

AAA – New Orleans (Pacific Coast League)

Zephyrs (36-32) 3, @ Round Rock Express (30-37) 2

Mike Pelfrey went five innings, fanning seven, walking two allowing two runs on six hits.  He threw 98 pitches, 60 of which were strikes.  I’m excited that he’s finally missing bats.

The Zs came from behind with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.  In the eight, singles from Anderson Hernandez, David Newhan and Ben Johnson produced a run.  In the ninth, Jake Gautreau began the winning rally with a single to right.  After a wild pitch, a sacrifice and a few walks, Johnson was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded to produce the go-ahead run. Gautreau was the only Z with multiple hits.

The bullpen of Jose Santiago, Eddie Camacho, Jon Adkins and Willie Collazo combined on four scoreless innings.

AA – Binghamton (Eastern League)

Reading Phillies (31-34) 7, @ Mets (27-35) 1

Michael Devaney was great over five shutout, one-hit innings punching out seven with only two walks.  However, the Phillies put together a three-run sixth against Sal Aguilar and a four run seventh against Joe Serfass.

The B-Mets offense mustered 11 hits, all singles.  Twenty-one year old Jose Coronado (.204/.265/.238) was 2-4 and 27 year old Mark Kiger (.287/.410/.421) was 3-5 with the Mets’ RBI.  Brett Harper (.264/.311/.445) who will turn 26 at the trade deadline also added two hits.

Caleb Stewart was 0-4.  After his .364/.407/.689 May, he’s hit .208/.283/.292 in June.

A+ -- St. Lucie (Florida State League)

@ Vero Beach Devil Rays (34-33) 7, Mets (30-37)  2

The D-Rays scored five times in the first two innings off Joseph Leaper, and the Mets never threatened.

Really, the only news here is the hitting streaks.  Dustin Martin (.299/.378/.441) was 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, while Jose Castro (.329/.369/.391) was 2-4 to make it nine in a row.  Sean Henry was 0-2 with a walk, but reached base safely for the 17th consecutive game.

A – Savannah (South Atlantic League)

Rome Braves (26-41) 4, Sand Gnats (20-47) 3

On Super Hero night at Grayson Stadium the Gnats turned in another rather mundane performance. Greg Mullens worked seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits, all to Braves 1B Tyler Flowers.  Mullens left David Koons a one-run lead, and Koons allowed the go-ahead home run.

Greg Veloz was 2-4 with a two-run bomb.  Leivi Ventura and DJ Wabick added two hits apiece.
