Yesterday, it was an honor and privilege to share our broadcast booth at Principal Park with Bob Costas who hung out for a few innings.  Costas took a shot at Bonds, calling the day he passes Aaron, a “sad day,” and I disagreed.  We discussed and disagreed about Bonds and steroids for a few innings.  The time I spent with him is very high on my list of professional thrills, right up alongside having Michael Lewis on air a few years ago in Stockton.

Later, he spoke wonderfully for an hour and a half at the Knapp Center at Drake in front of a huge audience.  He basically told funny stories for a few hours.

The Iowa Cubs would like to honor the memory of those killed at Virginia Tech earlier this year by wearing Virginia Tech hats tonight, but it’s unclear at this moment if there are enough Hokies hats in Des Moines to outfit our whole team.

Stars of the Day:
AAA: Mike DiFelice & Lastins Milledge
AA: Kevin Mulvey/Jose Coronado & Miguel Negron
A+: Eric Brown
A: Josh Thole & Sean McCraw

AAA – New Orleans (Pacific Coast League)
@ Zephyrs 7, Memphis Redbirds 6

As Yogi once said, it’s like déjà vu all over again.  For the third straight day, the Z’s built an early lead (6-0 by the third), only to see Memphis make it close late, but eventually have their comeback fall short.

The offense scored in the first on singles from Anderson Hernandez, Ruben Gotay and Lastings Milledge, who brought home a run, and an RBI double from Chip Ambres.   Milledge also began a four-run uprising in the third with a single.  Milledge finished 2-4 with a run and RBI, but the best day belonged to Mike DiFelice who was 3-4, with a solo HR in the fifth inning that eventually provided the winning margin.

Chan Ho Park was effective over six innings yielding three runs on six hits.  He struck out four and walked just one.  Clint Nageotte gave up a run while walking three in an inning and a third, while Ivan Maldonado gave up two in the ninth, but wrapped up the save, John Franco style, with the tying run on base.

Carlos Gomez was 0-5 to snap his 14 game hit streak.

Ben Johnson was placed on the DL April 13th with a strained shoulder.

AA – Binghamton (Eastern League)
B-Mets 5, @ Trenton 2

A funny thing happened last night in Trenton: the B-Mets played a baseball game.  Kevin Mulvey (1-2, 7.94), making his third start of the year delivered his best effort: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K.  The bullpen of Ricardo Morales, Brandon Nall, Ryan Cullen and Carlos Muniz struck out three without issuing a walk over four scoreless innings to finish the game.

Jose Coronado (.281/.281/.375) was 2-5 to extend his hitting streak to five games.  With 12 strikeouts and zero walks thus far, he could use a little more discipline.  Miguel Negron was 2-5 with a double and three RBI from the top of the order.

A+ -- St. Lucie (Florida State League)
Daytona Cubs 4, @ Mets 3

Daytona scored three times in the top of the ninth off Joe Serfass and Nick Abel to come back for the W.

Eric Brown, now 23, delivered his second straight one-run outing.  He lasted six innings, striking out one.  In his 13.1 IP this year, he hasn’t walked a single batter.

Daniel Murphy and Drew Butera each drove home a run on a day when St. Lucie managed only six hits and no player had more than one.

A – Savannah (South Atlantic League)
Greenville Drive 13, @ Sand Gnats 9

The Drive raced out to an early 8-1 lead by beating up on Todd Privett and withstood a seven run comeback from the Gnats over the game’s final three innings.  Both Jeremy Mizell and Emary Frederick allowed more runs out of the ‘pen.

The fun part is in the offensive part of box score where the Gnats scored a season high nine runs on 11 hits and seven walks.   Josh Thole (.357/500/.429 in 28 AB), who was 1-2, with a double, R and RBI, and Sean McCraw (.333/.556/.500 in 18 AB), 0-2 with an RBI each deserve special mention for drawing three walks.  Daniel Stegall, Leivi Ventura and Jonathan Sanchez all had a pair of hits, while Juan Lagares tripled and drove home two.
