Will Musto of Sheabaseball.com did the Friday night honors.
Stars of the Day:
AAA: Michael Tucker/Jose Offerman
AA: Ambiorix Concepcion/Corey Ragsdale
A+: Caleb Stewart
A: *Waner Mateo
SSA: Dustin Martin
R (GCL): Daniel Stegall
R (APP): Emmanuel Garcia
Norfolk Tides (AAA -
International League)
@ Ottawa 6, Norfolk 4
No Tide had more than one hit as the team spread its six
hits out Friday night, while Lastings Milledge, Chris Basak and Joe
Hietpas went a combined 0-8, although Milledge did walk twice.
Ruben Gotay, in his first game in the Mets system since being
acquired for Jeff Keppinger, went 1-4 with two strikeouts.
Norfolk's big inning came in the sixth when Michael Tucker hit a
two-run homer and Jose Offerman a one-run triple - were Edgardo
Alfonzo not thrown out at the plate, it would have been a two-run
triple - to give the Tides a 4-3 lead.
Norfolk pitcher Anderson Garcia blew the lead in the bottom of the
seventh. He allowed three hits and three runs to score while only
getting two of the five batters he faced out. Juan Perez, brought
in to relieve Garcia with two outs in the seventh, gave up a
two-run double to the first batter he faced but forced his second
batter to ground out to Edgardo Alfonzo at third base to end the
inning.
Binghamton Mets (AA - Eastern
League)
Binghamton 8, @ Portland 7
Although the offense was rolling, nobody on the Mets pitched
well, with every pitcher giving up at least a run. Thankfully, they
recieved just enough run support to squeek out a win.
Ambiorix Concepcion was once again hot at the plate, but this time
along with Corey Ragsdale. Both players went 3-3 and had a hand in
all eight of Binghamton's runs; they had five combined runs scored
and three combined RBIs. Carlos Gomez, who went 1-4, continued his
hitting streak by hitting a home run. Gomez and Bobby Malek led off
the inning by hitting back-to-back homers.
Of the four B-Mets pitches who played Friday night, only Ryan
Cullen did not give up an earned run - the runners that scored
while he was on the mound were inherited. He earned a hold for his
efforts in the seventh and eighth innings. Matt Lindstrom, who gave
up a run in the ninth, pitched 1.2 innings and recieved the
save.
St. Lucie Mets (A+ - Florida State
League)
Lakeland 8, @ St. Lucie 5 (10 innings)
Jose Coronado went the dreaded 0-6 at the plate for the
Mets, also earning himself a Golden Sombrero with four strikeouts.
Like Jacob Eigsti of the Brooklyn Cyclones, however, who earned his
Golden Sombrero in Brooklyn's twenty-six inning game on Thursday,
Coronado's Sombrero is tainted because he earned it in an extra
inning ballgame. Caleb Stewart went 2-5 with three RBI.
St. Lucie starting pitcher Michael Swindell only lasted two
innings. He gave up four earned runs.
Hagerstown Suns (A - South
Atlantic League)
Hagerstown 0, @ Lexington 0 (Suspended due to rain)
Game suspended due to rain after Lexington pitcher Brian
Bogusevic sent the Suns down in order in the first inning. Waner
Mateo struck out the only batter he faced.
Brooklyn Cyclones (SSA - NY/Penn
League)
Brooklyn 9, @ Jamestown 7
Dustin Martin went 4-4 with a double and Jason Jacobs hit
his first home run of the season.
Tobi Stoner, the winning pitcher, went 6.0 innings and gave up five
runs, three earned, while walking three and striking three batters
out.
GCL Mets (R - Gulf Coast
League)
GCL Mets 2, @ GCL Nationals 1(11 innings)
No Met had more than one hit, although seven Mets did have a
hit. Daniel Stegall and Nicholas Giarraputo each had an RBI;
Stegall had the game winning RBI in the eleventh.
None of the Mets three pitchers went more than four innings.
Kingsport Mets (R - Appalachian
League)
@ Burlington 6, Kingsport 5
Emmanuel Garcia went 2-3 from the leadoff slot from the Mets
as part of Kingsports twelve hit barrage. The Indians, however,
out-hit them with thirteen hits. Brahiam Maldonado was ejected in
the eighth by home plate umpire Matt Abbot.
Julio Polanco, Kingsport's starter, gave up five earned runs in
four innings pitched.

"Jose Offerman (hit) a one-run triple - were Edgardo Alfonzo not thrown out at the plate, it would have been a two-run triple..."
Isn't that an impossible scoring call? Got to love the umpires/officials in the minors, heh. Good to see Gomez coming on, especially with all the Milledge trade talk... Re: Re: Mets Minor League Report 7-22-06
You're right, that scoring call - 3B, with Alfonzo thrown out at the plate - is absolutely wrong. Here's the first sentence of the note from rule 10.07 (Determining the Value of Base Hits in the Official Scorer Section of the MLB rules): "NOTE: Do not credit the batter with a three-base hit when a preceding runner is put out at the plate, or would have been out but for an error. "
Seems clear enough to me, but I promise you, minor league official scorers do wierd things all the time. Amen on Gomez, I'm very excited about his ability to adapt to AA. Re: Re: Re: Mets Minor League Report 7-22-06

heh, its actually a black and white rule, go figure. I was getting at common sense.
any news on Shawn Bowman? MiLB no longer has him on any Mets roster. while I'm asking, some pitchers have gone MIA... Jeriome Robertson, sent to GCL, no appearances since late June. Jeffrey Landing, last started on July 11th. William Vazquez, been on the AAA DL for over 2 months now. Surgery? Alay Soler, sent to AAA, two weeks later goes on DL, hadnt pitched sinse demotion ...seems odd. Re: Re: Re: Re: Mets Minor League Report 7-22-06

Shawn Bowman had back problems at the end of May and he and the Mets were talking about a surgery that would make him miss the beginning of next season even.
I read somewhere that Alay Soler was in a boot for his calf in Norfolk. He was toughing it out at the MLB level, but decided to heal before pitching in the minors. Others I'm not sure about. I'll see what I can find. Trackbacks
