I just want to thank the Mets and their 11 run sixth inning Sunday for giving me an excuse to call friends from NYC and catch up.

Sunday, with a big lead, I thought Heath Bell’s stuff looked MLB caliber.  Patience, my friends.

The Mets rescued Edgardo Alfonzo with a minor league contract from the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic Leauge and he’ll report to AAA Norfolk on Monday.  There was a time when Alfonzo was my favorite Met.  Maybe this assignment will prepare him to coach in the minors next season, and even retire as a Met. I’d like that for sure.

In general, I think minor league depth is a little overrated, but the Mets are now at the other extreme.  I want to see impact prospects on rosters, but after that, does it matter if they’re playing with organizational guys or NPs?  However, the Mets system is so thin that it now handicaps their ability to make trades.   The Mets full-season affiliates are now 169-192, and all of the US affiliates are 199-232.  After the Mets top guys, the Humber, Milledge, Martinez, there is little depth for Omar to work with in trade.

Apparently Alay Soler’s been walking around AAA with his foot in a boot and the Tides might DL him.

Josh Hamilton update.  One of my favorite stories of the 2006 baseball season has hit safely in six straight games for the Hudson Valley Renegades and after a 2-4 Sunday with his first triple this year is hitting .323/.364/.494 in 9 games.  Tampa’s Farm Director Mitch Lukavics told me on-air that he and the Tampa Bay organization, are “tickled” and pleased to have Josh back, healthy, and playing baseball.  I believe him.

Sorry I forgot to send this earlier.

Stars of the Day:

AAA: Lastings Milledge & Chase Lambin

AA:

A+: Chuck Smith & Carlos Muniz

A: Waner Mateo

SSA: Joe Holden

R (APP):
R (GCL):

Norfolk (AAA - International League)

@ Louisville 4, Norfolk 2

The Bats came from behind with a run in the sixth and three in the bottom of the eighth against Mitch Wylie to overtake the Tides.  The loss was Norfolk’s sixth in seven games and drops them to 35-58.

Lastings Milledge’s two run HR in the fourth was Norfolk’s only offense all day.  Chase Lambin had two singles as well.

Once again, Jose Lima was strong in AAA, working 6.1 one-run innings.  That’s nice.

Binghamton (AA - Eastern League)

Bowie 4, @ Binghamton 0

The B-Mets couldn’t touch Radhames Liz, who dealt six four-hit shutout innings in his AA debut.  Baseball America ranked Liz as the Orioles 12th best prospect before the season, and praised his “electric” fastball.  He rolled through the Carolina League with a 2.82 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 83 IP.

The B-Mets (45-47), who have been playing much better recently, are up to third place in the EL’s northern division 8.5 games behind division leading Portland.

St. Lucie (A+ - Florida State League)

@ Jupiter 3, St. Lucie 0

The Hammerheads held St. Lucie to just 4 singles.  Mike Swindell was hit hard in three innings, but Chuck Smith (3.1 IP) and Carlos Muniz (1 IP) each held the Hammerheads from scoring.
St. Lucie, which won the first half, is 13-9, three games behind the division leading Daytona Cubs in the second half and 53-39 overall.

Hagerstown (A – South Atlantic League)

@ Lake County 4, Hagerstown 0

Jose Castro’s bunt base-hit was it for the Suns, who lost their ninth straight game to slip back into the SAL cellar.  Waner Mateo made a spot start for Jeffrey Landing and gave up two runs in five innings, while striking out six.

Brooklyn (SSA – New York Penn League)

Brooklyn 5, @ Vermont 4

The Cyclones won their sixth straight game, scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.  Joe Holden continued to show signs of life with a 2-5 night that included 2 RBI.

Kingsport Mets (R – Appalachian League)

Kingsport 5, @ Pulaski 3

The Mets scored four times in the eighth inning to come from behind against the Jays farm club.  Secondbaseman Anthony Manuel drove home two runs in a 2-4 day.

At 12-11, Kingsport is three games behind division leading Pulaski.

GCL Mets (R – Gulf Coast League)

GCL Mets

Off.  The GCL Mets are 6-16 in last place in the GCL East.
