            The PCL-IL showdown takes place Wednesday. 

 

Binghamton (AA - Eastern League)

@ Trenton 7, Binghamton 3

 

            The Thunder roared for two runs in the first and three in the fifth off Rich Rundles (0-2, 4.80).  After Orlando Roman gave up a couple of runs in relief, Ivan Maldonado struck out three in a scoreless bottom of the eighth.  The B-Mets offense, held to only four hits, all singles, did all of its damage in a three run sixth.  Carlos Gomez was 1-4.

            The Eastern League will take a two-day All-Star break and resume play on Thursday.  Since Mike Pelfrey and Henry Owens were unavailable for the Eastern League All-Star game following their promotion to the Bigs the Eastern League added Andy Wilson and Ivan Maldonado to the squad on Sunday. 

 

 

St. Lucie (A+ - Florida State League)

Jupiter 5, @ St. Lucie 3

 

            The Hammerheads scored three times in the first two innings of starter Mike Swindell who fell to (2-2, 2.28) with the loss.  He struck out five and walked one in his six innings.  After St. Lucie picked up a single run in the sixth, each team added a pair in the ninth to complete the scoring.  The game ended with the tying run at the plate for St. Lucie.

            Mike Carp (.270/.374/.388) led the way with a 3-4 night that included 2 doubles and 2 RBI.  He now has 16 doubles and 6 HR – second on the team to Jesus Flores in both categories.  Thirdbaseman Ivan Naccarata (.320/.370/.400 in 7 games) also was 3-4 with a double. 

 

 

Hagerstown (A – South Atlantic League)

Brooklyn (SSA – New York Penn League)

@ Brooklyn 5, State College 4

 

            After falling behind 3-1 early, the Cyclones score four unanswered runs in the the fifth through seventh innings to take the lead.  The Spikes scored a run in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game, but Mets’ third rounder Joe Smith struck out three for the save in the ninth.  The submariner picked up his third save and had now struck out 12 in nine innings worth of work.

            Starter Tobi Stoner gave up three runs in 5.1 IP.  He struck out six and walked just one in 5.1 innings.  Grady Hinchman allowed a run in 2.1 innings of relief, but fanned five. 

 

 

Kingsport Mets (R – Appalachian League)

@ Kingsport 4, Danville 2

 

            Centerfielder Sean Henry, a converted SS, was 2-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored in the win.  Catcher Joan Martinez, who saw a few games in Hagerstown and one in Brooklyn was 2-3 with a solo HR for the Mets.

            Starter Dustin Childress shut out the Braves through four innings, although he didn’t strike a batter out. Reliever Steven Cheney followed with three scoreless innings, complete with two strikeouts for the win.

            John Holdzkom lowered his ERA from 18.00 to 13.50 with two scoreless one hit innings in game one.  He struck out two.
