For the first time I can remember this season, the Mets affiliates were shut out on Monday pending the result of the GCL game where no box score was available.  The affiliates were 0-7, and were outscored by 26-8 for the seven games that we know about.

While Mike Pelfrey didn’t dominate in AA, don’t let that blunt your enthusiasm for brilliant pitching from Henry Owens, Deolis Guerra for Hagerstown and Timothy Stronach for Kingsport.

Brian Moritz in the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin profiled Henry Owens on Monday.  Apparently he’s working on adding a changeup to his fb/slider combo.

Norfolk (AAA - International League)

@ Toledo 4, Norfolk 3

@ Toledo 7, Norfolk 2

The Mudhens used a 4 run fourth to overcome the Tides’ early 2-0 lead in game one.  Evan MacLane (6-3, 3.16) took the loss in exchange for allowing four runs on eight hits in his five innings of work.  After starting hot in AAA with wins in six of his first seven starts, MacLane has slowed down and now has lost each of his last three.  In those three outings, MacLane has a 6.32 ERA (11 ER/15.2 IP) and opponents have hit .324 against him.  Yes, yes, I know that wins are closer to an accounting gimmick than an accurate measure of a pitcher’s performance, but I wanted a quick-n-dirty accounting gimmick that would describe MacLane’s recent troubles.

At the plate, Anderson Hernandez (.256/.304/.302) was 1-3 with a triple and scored a run, while Victor Diaz’s (.249/.301/.380) solo HR was his only hit in a 1-3 game one.

In game two, the Mud Hens hit Yusaku Iriki (1-3, 4.88) hard tallying four runs on six hits in just 2.1 IP.  Blake McGinley (1-1, 3.65) and Mitch Wylie (0-2, 5.21) each allowed runs of their own.  Tagg Bozied (.238/.365/.338) was the only Tide with multiple hits in a 2-3 effort with a double.

Binghamton (AA - Eastern League)

@ Harrisburg 4, Binghamton 0

@ Harrisburg 3, Binghamton 0

The B-Mets mustered only seven hits as they were swept on a rainy day in Harrisburg.  In game one, Mike Pelfrey (3-2, 2.88) lost to Kip Bouknight who held the Tides to four singles.  Pelfrey was touched for four runs on five hits in five innings.  He walked two and struck out five.  Henry Owens (1-1, 0.79) struck out all three batters he faced in the sixth.  In 22.2 IP, he’s struck out 47 batters while recording 21 outs in the field.

Rain shortened game two to five and a half innings, but the B-Mets managed only three singles against Oscar Alvarez.  Miguel Pinago yielded three runs on seven hits in his five innings in dropping to 1-6 with a 4.41 ERA.

St. Lucie (A+ - Florida State League)

St. Lucie @ Brevard County

Postponed due to rain.  They’ll play two on Tuesday.

Hagerstown (A – South Atlantic League)

@ Delmarva 2, Hagerstown 1

Deolis Guerra (2-3, 2.70) fired five no-hit innings, but walked three and gave up an unearned run in the fifth, tying up the game.  Delmarva scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth against Kevin Tomasiewicz (5-2, 4.03).  Jonel Pacheco (.265/.324/.363) was 2-3 and had the only multiple hit day for the Suns.

            Jon Niese throws Tuesday.

Brooklyn (SSA – New York Penn League)

Hudson Valley 4, @ Brooklyn 1

The Cyclones dropped to 0-6 with their Monday loss to Tampa’s NYP League affiliate.  Catcher Jason Jacobs was 2-4.  Shortstop Luis Rivera, (22 years old) who began the year with Chicago’s Mid-West League affiliate in Peoria was 2-3 with a walk.

On the hill Jorge Reyes was much better than on Opening Night, but still gave up two runs in five innings to take his second loss.

Kingsport Mets (R – Appalachian League)

@ Johnson City 2, Kingsport 1

Timothy Stronach, the Mets 22nd round pick in 2006 draft three weeks ago out of Worcester State (MA) College was dominant over five one-hit innings, but Kingsport couldn’t hold a 1-0 lead.

Sean Henry, who BA had listed as the Mets 27th best prospect heading into this season, was 2-4 with a double and a triple.  Henry hit .255/.350/.416 in Kingsport last year and turns 21 on August 18th.  Secondbaseman Ivan Naccarata was 2-3 with a walk.
